MakerBot Workshop Technician
At the heart of the MakerBot Workshop bustles a very special cluster of machines — a ring of fifteen to twenty 3D printers (MakerBots) called the BotFarm. These machines are each tuned to fabricate a tremendous array of objects, seven days a week — projects like artwork for Laurie Anderson, covers for Time Out New York, window displays for the New Museum, props for the Colbert Report, cutting edge DIY toys for our distributors, secret machines for our collaborators, and 3D printed robot mascots for video production. The MakerBot Workshop Technician is responsible for keeping the BotFarm functioning productively, while wrangling the many print projects must be completed.
While we prefer to work with current MakerBot Operators with prior experience operating MakerBots, we welcome anyone who can make a case for experience repairing, operating, maintaining, and optimizing other equipment: DIY projects, carpentry, RC cars/planes/quadrocopters, robotics, puppetry, stopmotion animation, fine art presses, motion picture cameras, photo printing, silkscreening, industrial machinery, packaging machines, for example. What machines do you love working with and how have you kept them humming along in perfect working order?
These are the Workshop Technician’s primary responsibilities:
- Keep 15-20 MakerBots (the “BotFarm”) running smoothly, always ready for the current day’s printing tasks.
- Repair any MakerBot that misbehaves or falls out of spec.
- Maintain detailed records re: how the bots are functioning and in what configuration.
- Manage the print queue for the entire print team (including weekday/weekend interns and part time staff).
- Harvest printed items for MakerBot print tasks, the display case, and print-on-demand requests.
- Repair STLs and other 3D models for better printing.
- With the cooperation of everyone in the Workshop, keep the space neat and tidy for our visitors. We have major news agencies in here on a weekly basis.
Notes for Candidates
This is a full time position, and candidates must be available to work in the MakerBot Workshop in Brooklyn Monday-Friday from 10am to 6pm.
Our dream candidate is comfortable with Mac, PC, Linux, has had some basic 3D modeling training and/or DIY kit building experience, has a passion both for pushing MakerBots to the limits of what can be printed as well as one for bringing the machinery back from the brink when the components complain. If you haven’t built a MakerBot before, no problem — that will be your first project if selected for this post. We strongly recommend that you navigate to the build instructions for the Thing-O-Matic at makerbot.com to make yourself familiar with our machines before interviewing with us.
We are located in Boerum Hill in Brooklyn. Easy access to subway lines.
