MakerBot Heroes

Turtle Shell Racer by Skimbal

Weeks ago my daughter came to me with a toy catalog to show me a pink kitchen set she wanted. 1  I suggested that she use her existing pink kitchen set.  She pointed out that this particular kitchen set had a microwave where hers did not.  I offered that she and I could design and print one to go with her existing set.  She responded that she would need it large enough to match the rest of her set.  I explained that one of the only people I knew who was capable of printing something that large was Michael Curry and that we might need to ask him.

Fast forward to yesterday after work.  She wanted to draw plans for things we could print on our Thing-O-Matic.  One of her requests was a blender.  We drew one and then she asked if we could really print it.  I suggested that we could – but that we’d need to do it in big pieces and might need to ask Webca for help.

Then she piped up, “Or Michael Curry.”

Webca, Michael Curry – you guys are heroes in our house.  :)

  1. By way of context, my daughter is a little over four years old. []

CUBE -The 3D printed 3D printer by Webca

CUBE -The 3D printed 3D printer by Webca

Thingiverse champion Webca has done it again.  First he printed an entire Cupcake CNC on his Cupcake CNC.  Now, he’s used that printed printer to print another printer.  His creation has a much larger build area, linear bearings, custom heated build platform, used more than 15 pounds of plastic, cost around $3,000.00 (which I’m sure does not include his time) and eight months of printing.  Webca suggests this might be the largest multi-print to date.  He’s got me convinced.

Here’s a video of it in action:

Thingiverse All-Star: Most Liked Thing (aka the Most Popular)

Who has been rocking Thingiverse and doing cool and amazing stuff?  The Thingiverse All-Stars!

Most Liked Thing - 3D printed full size makerbot by Webca

Most Liked Thing - 3D printed full size makerbot by Webca

It probably won’t come as a surprise to many people that the most liked, and therefore the most popular, Thing on Thingiverse is the the 3D printed full-size MakerBot designed and printed by Webca.  This is quite likely the most epic design and print on all of Thingiverse.  His printed MakerBot Cupcake CNC case is made up of more than 150 individual pieces.  There’s no much I can say to add to the glowing praise and admiration shown in the comments to this incredible work.
