Colbert Head Gears by emmett

Thingiverse citizen Pattywac recently organized a “MakerStrong Mashup Design Challege.”  The winner was to receive $60.00 from Pattwac himself with MakerBot kicking in another $100.00 in store credit!  And now it is time to reveal that winner…

Despite the difficulty of working with and not ruining such a flawless bust, there were some great entries to the Makerstrong design challenge.  Entries ranging from the beautification of my favorite childhood claymation show (Gumbert by JamieClay), to a tool for the next Colbert wannabe/stalker (Large Stephen Colbert Head by ALxD) made the judging process entertaining.

In the end emmett was able to claim the prize with a “decidedly creepier derivative” of his Heart Gears, which he called the “Colbert Head Gears.”

Congrats to emmett, the first repeat winner of these design challenges!

Just a week after I bemoaned its absence, here we are: a printable Fleur De Lis.  Once again, Thingiverse rises to the challenge.  Is there anything that Thingiverse users can’t do?

I’m going to go with a “no” until definitively proven wrong, with an irrefutable proof in formal logic.  Thanks for continuing not to disprove me, phibroptic!

My wife, and her old sorority, are big fans of the Fleur De Lis. (A decorative lily.) Also used (in various forms) by scouts, sports teams, and many others. When I finished assembling, testing, and calibrating my Thing-O-Matic, This was my first print as a way to thank her for indulging my nerdy obsessions. I didn't design it, I pulled it off the Google Sketchup warehouse. Thingiverse citizen and designer extraordinaire Twotimes has put together a new design challenge for you!  He’s putting up $50.00 in cash with MakerBot contributing an additional $100.00 in store credit to the winner!

It’s time to switch up the contests a bit.  Although 3D printing contests are cool, Thingiverse is about the universe of digital things not just printed things.  So, here’s a contest for all of you cutters out there.

Design something that involves cutting (Laser/Craftcutter/CNC), cardboard and bags (could be handbags or balloon envelopes or anything in between).  Add the tag “cutbag” to your thing.

The rules are simple: enter something that you have made, extra points go to open source things with the design files.  No points go to closed source things.  Make sure you also have a photo of the finished thing.  Also, don’t forget to tag it with “cutbag!”

All entries will be judged by:

• Awesomeness (I know, very subjective, but then I get to make the rules…) Don’t worry, I’ll have other people judging as well.
• Attention to detail
• Amount of discussion generated
• Completeness of entry (design files, instructions, photo of finished project)
• How many likes you get

The prize is $50 through paypal from me and if anyone else chips in, that also.

The deadline is April 15th.
