Shadow QR Code Sculpture

Godel Escher Bach QR Code shadow cube by SashimiTabernacleChoir

Thingiverse has already seen several variations of the “GEB cube” a cube designed to cast a shadow of the letters G, E, or B depending upon the direction of light passing through it.  SashimiTabernacleChoir’s QR code version is decidedly more ambitious.  As SashimiTabernacleChoir points out, you would probably need highly focused light1 or possibly a light source from very far away.  Either way, this is one object I would love to see printed!

It might be possible to make a version of idea where it had just a flat QR code panel for the bottom and two adjacent sides.   This would allow almost any light source to serve.2  Another cool variation would be to design the three sides so they could be snapped together – and print all three flat on the print bed at the same time.

  1. Did someone say giant laser?! []
  2. Since the light wouldn’t have to make it past all the inside structures []

Thingitag by whosawhatsis

Having seen the elegant tent-fold name tags for the objects in the BotCave display case, I’ve been been thinking about designing my own tags templates for objects in Inkscape so that I can mark what Skeinforge settings I selected, date of printing, etc.. But now MakerBot Operator whosawhatsis has not only made one set of awesome tags for prints, he has made two sizes. Really elegant tags….

What?! You tell me that it’s a bookmarklet I can use on any page in Thingiverse to generate tags automatically?! Now that is both cool and fantastically easy to use. If I can just figure out how to hook these tags around my 30% scaled Stanford Bunny prints….

3D Printer Alchemy

Or, transmuting a digital object into a real 3D object embedded with a 2D representation of its “DNA.”

Digital DNA

A little over a month ago I had pondered how cool it would be to have things on Thingiverse embedded with QR codes – so you could show the bottom of the object to a friend, they could grab the digital file, and print off a duplicate.  Well, l0b0 has done just that with his parametric box!
