VIDEO: Virtual Economics! MakerBot! Jokes!

Besides being super entertaining, this video from PBS’ Idea Channel is a great explanation of how the post-scarcity economy plays out in Minecraft. Host Mike Rugnetta talks about MakerBot’s place in this.

Do we agree with Mike that 3D printing organs in the home might not be a good thing? I’m all for it. Why not?

Converting Your Minecraft Creation Into An STL

Thingiverse citizen paulharter has posted instructions for converting your build on his Minecraft server  into an .stl file.

Log in to Minecraft and go to 46.38.166.50

Build with sand inside the building

Add a signpost with your email

Press PRINT and you will be sent a .stl file of your model

Paul’s using OpenSCAD for the conversion, and he provides this one caution in the comments so far: creating a model with blocks that only touch diagonally point-to-point confuse the system, so be sure to have a connection with an edge. If you want a rundown on using OpenSCAD, click the link above. Our Education Team has put together all sorts of good information on various modeling software.

It’s here: you can print from Minecraft.

Some enterprising students over that the MIT Media Lab have pioneered a process that will tickle the fancy of nerds the world over: 3d printing objects created in Minecraft.

We’re awfully excited about seeing what will come out of this (I don’t see their python code  as of yet, but maybe I’m just slow…) so we’ll be watching closely.  Thanks to the eagle-eyed Adam  Cecchetti for the tip.
