Did you say… Robot Film Festival?!?!

Robot Film Festival in New York!

Robot Film Festival in New York!

You may remember Heather Knight from her awesome Botacon talk entitled, “Robotic Touch: Capacitive Sensing to Understand Human Body Language.”  Well, she’s organized a film festival!  Wait for it…  a film festival…  about ROBOTS!1

The Robot Film Festival was founded by roboticist Heather Knight of Marilyn Monrobot to inject a sense of playfulness into traditional science and engineering and explore new frontiers for robotics before the technology is even possible.

The event itself is a two-day festival July 9-10 taking place at Three Legged Dog theater in lower Manhattan.  In addition to the juried film screenings, there will be a live performances, cocktail and coffee mixers throughout AND a red carpet award ceremony with interactive installations and uniquely designed ‘botsker’ awards.  Don’t forget your party shoes (or wheels)!

Please submit your outstanding, dazzling, hilarious or thought-provoking short film.  JUST ONE REQUIREMENT: please feature a robot as one of the main characters as or framing devices of the narrative. Films should be less than 8 minutes long.

Deadline: June 5, 2011!

Follow us on twitter for the latest details: @robotfilmfest

Botacon 0 – as seen through Twitter

Botacon 0 was beyond awesome.  I got to meet people whose things I print on Thingiverse1, whose blogs I read every single day, and who I correspond and chat with over e-mail, Twitter, and IM.  I also met with other dads who want their children to grow up not just experiencing life, but understanding they have the ability to actually effect change on the world.  Putting names2 to faces and meeting these people while we shared experiences about the robots we love was the absolute highlight of my trip.  Thank you to MakerBot Industries for putting on an amazing Botacon 0 and thank you to everyone else I met for taking the time to stop and chat with me.

To help memorialize the event, I’ve compiled the 19 pages of #botacon hashtag search results into one long post. 3 (Remember, it’s in reverse chron) 4 Share and enjoy!

At the Botcave!

BotCave store!

BotCave store!

Imagine, if you will, a symphony of tearing plastic sheeting, squeaking packing tape, humming motors, camera flashes, and the occasional buzzing machine.

Today has been a very exciting day for me.  In preparation for tomorrow’s first ever Botacon I caught the redeye from California1 to New York arriving early this morning.  A little while later I arrived at the Botcave – MakerBot Industries headquarters in Brooklyn.

The place is completely abuzz with activity – numerous robots humming, bubble wrap crinkling, and Thing-O-Matic boxes getting packed, stacked, and shipped to loving homes around the world.  I can’t wait to work play with one!

LoBotomy Clinic

Even Walt thinks the LoBotomy Clinic is a good idea

Even Walt thinks the LoBotomy Clinic is a good idea

Do you remember the days of old?  Will you tell your grandchildren of the days when a robot with problems was left to fend for themselves with no chance of improvement feeding on stray bits of plastic, smelling of burnt hair and ABS.   This are things that will be lost in time, like tears in the rain, like the sound of a connecting modem or a hard drive spinning up.  For, our modern times have brought us the LoBotomy Clinic!  No longer will your ‘bots question your awesome makin’ skillz. 1  Here’s the latest from the LoBotomy Clinicians:

lo·Bot·o·my
noun 1. A series of radical and invasive physical therapies, used to treat ailing robots.

Sad robots make sad humans. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, you could call the A-Team. Or you could check your robot into the LoBotomy Clinic. You can fill out the Intake Form in advance or just show up with your busted bot and we’ll help you diagnose and troubleshoot to get it in tip top shape. Learn the best tips for 3D printing and preventative maintenance, or drop by if you just want to see some finely tuned bots in action. We are looking forward to seeing you at Botacon 0!

Even if your ‘bot doesn’t need any TLC, you have to take a look at that sweet Intake Form.

Who do you want to see at Botacon?

Robot talks!

Robot talks!

With the Botacon approaching on December 11, 2010, we’re looking to line up some speakers and to spur some interesting discussions.

Who do you want to see at Botacon?  A famous robot scientist?  MakerBot owners?  Your favorite amateur robot scientist?  Your high school science teacher?  A robot artist?  An artist who uses robots?

Leave a comment and drop a few names and we’ll see what we can do about getting them there!

What is a Botacon?

First ever Botacon!

First ever Botacon!

A Botacon is an exciting get together of robots and the people who are creative near them.  Already we’ve got several hundred people interested in this all-day event.  (Don’t worry – I’m saving a spot just for you.)  It will be at the Brooklyn Lyceum from about 10am until 6pm on December 11, 2010.  Right now we’re still taking suggestions for ideas and topics, but the rough outline is:

  • A keynote speaker in the morning
  • A bunch of small talks and discussions (anywhere from 5-20 minutes each)
  • About 2 hours for lunch
  • A workshop project
  • Some more talks and discussions (also 5-20 minutes each)
  • Time for people to get dinner
  • A bar drinkup1

However, since we’re still putting together the program for the Botacon we need your input.  Please take the time to fill out a super short survey, drop us a line, or leave a comment.  We’d love to know:

  • Who do you want to hear from as the keynote speaker?
  • Who would you like to hear from?
  • What kinds of talks would you be interested in?
  • What kinds of things would you like to hear about?
  • What would you like to see?

And, don’t forget to submit your talk!

I hope you decide to come out.  It just wouldn’t be the future without you!  :)

  1. Because even roboticists need libation.  Hint: If you have a robot, like robots, can spell robots, or have an evil laugh – you count as a roboticist in my book. []
