Laurie Anderson Collaborates with MakerBot!

Laurie Anderson joins the growing roster of artists creating original work on a MakerBot, with her latest exhibit, “Forty-Nine Days in the Bardo.” The multimedia exhibition is running now through November 19th at the Fabric Workshop & Museum in Philadelphia.

The team at MakerBot performed a 3D scan on a clay model of Laurie Anderson’s dog Lola, creating a virtual 3D object.  From this object, we printed out over 20 plastic models of the scan. The pack of plastic dogs is currently on display in the museum’s lobby, alongside a Thing-O-Matic.

YouTube Preview Image

Check out this book trailer for bestselling author and Internet pioneer Steven Johnson‘s The Innovator’s Cookbook (on sale October 4, 2011).  Helen Yentus, the designer of the book cover (featured in the video), worked with our team to 3D print the letters on a MakerBot Thing-O-Matic. This video documents her process from first sketch — to MakerBotting the letters — to photo shoot — to printed book. Cover photo and video are by YDESIGN.

Here are some details about the book from the video description.

The Innovator’s Cookbook is an essential book for anyone interested in innovation: the key texts on the topic from a wide range of fields as well as interviews with successful, real-world innovators, prefaced with a new essay by Johnson that draws upon his own experiences as an entrepreneur and author.

Turtle Shell Racers on The Engadget Show

Check out this video of the folks at Engadget racing a duo of turtle shell racers around their offices!

The lil’ guys weren’t too tired to pay a visit to the live taping of the Engadget Show yesterday, where they were a big hit with the audience! Hosts Brian Heater and Tim Stevens drove them around the studio as an intro to a segment on Maker Faire NYC, which featured the turtle shell race track and designer Michael Curry (Skimbal).

The Engadget team also devoted a blog post to the turtle shell racers.  Here’s just a little of what they had to say:

“MakerBot’s Turtle Shell Racers may well be just the ambassador that the world of 3D printing needs. The toy football-sized RC cars are proof positive that the devices can turn just about anything you can imagine into reality.”

MakerBot Thing-O-Matic gets exploded in the New York Times!

The New York times is running an amazing infographic today by Frank O’Connell about the Thing-O-Matic.  We’re extremely excited about how well it explains our pride and joy to a wider audience.

As you can see, it also mentions the Stepstruder Mk7 in a dual configuration.  That’s right folks — the compact size of the Mk7 is going to make experimental dual extrusion possible for the first time.  Stay tuned for details, or come to World Maker Faire NYC this weekend to see a them in action!
