Thingiverse | Mars Base Challenge

Thingiverse | Mars Challenge

Could you live on Mars? Certainly not without great design and engineering. That’s why we, in cooperation with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, are excited to present the Makerbot Mars Base Challenge. Taking Mars’ extreme cold, high radiation levels, lack of oxygen, and frequent dust storms into consideration, design a utilitarian Mars base that can withstand the elements and maybe even make you feel at home, despite being 140 million miles away from Earth, on average.

Learn more about Mars and what kind of home could actually sustain life there on the Imagine Mars site.

Upload your design to Thingiverse with the tag #MakerBotMars between May 30th and June 12th. Entries must be tagged #MakerBotMars to be considered and will be judged by a subjective panel of NASA-JPL and MakerBot employees on scientific feasibility, creativity, and printability.

Make sure to read all the Official Rules here.

This maybe a dumb question. But, is the end result to be a full sized livable structure with all the parts 3D printed? Or, is it to have a small model of a livable structure?

And for those of us that do not have a website or design software, but Draft the old fashioned way, what tjen? How do I submit MY ideas??

@M Lawrence: Good question! The challenge is designed for contestants to build a prototype rather than the actual base. If you have any other questions about it please e-mail us at thoughts(at)makerbot(dot)com.

@Aaron Christopher Ament: Sorry, but designs must be submitted through the methods described in the official rules.

I wanted to know if we had to give the scaled model. So, do we have to have a scale factor to the real base. Also, do we have to design the inside of the base as well as the outside. Finally, do we have to label what each part is.

I was just curious about when the results for this challenge would come out. I thought that they were supposed to be out on June 25th.

The number of entries doubled in the last 24 hours of the contest, leaving us with a lot to print test. Sorry for the delay, but we’re printing entries as I write this and we’ll announce soon!

Hi Makerbot, it’s been nearly a month now, and we are a bit worried. Could you give us a date for when you plan to announce the winners please ?

Don’t be worried. We’re almost done! There were just too many good designs. Thanks for paying attention. We’ll announce soon.

    Hi Judges,

Its August, more than a month from when we first submitted the designs. Do you have any idea when the results will be released.

Do you have an estimate of how much longer it’s going to be? Any kind of ETIC?

Draco. What does ETIC stands for? On another note. .. seriously guys when will the results be published?

it does not make any sense saying “there’s just too many design” why not just choose the 3 winners and print the 3 models? i hope u guys not wasting the resources printing 300+ models than only choose 3. Or maybe this competition is not going to happen anyway.
