MakerBot Academy | A Gem of a 3D Printer Arrives in Athens

MakerbotAcademyHeader

Thanks to MakerBot Academy, the kids at Barrow Elementary School in Athens, GA are making a splash as word of their brand new MakerBot 3D Printer spreads across town.

One class of third graders is leading the charge to make 3D printing part of their curriculum. They’re using their MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer to study rocks and minerals. As part of this study, the class got a tutorial from a local Athens jewelry store on creating 3D gem designs. Grant St. Onge had the honor of being the first student to 3D print his design.

Librarian Andy Plemmons, who launched the campaign on DonorsChoose.org to crowdfund the David Barrow Elementary’s MakerBot 3D Printer, has big aspirations for his students’ future.

“I’m excited that we have so many young experts in our building that will be with us for two more years,” said Plemmons. “These students will be leaders in teaching others how to use SketchUp and other 3D modeling tools. This is only the beginning.”

News of Plemmons’ successful campaign spread quickly thanks to a write-up in the local paper. Two other schools nearby also received MakerBot 3D Printers through DonorsChoose.org. We can’t wait to see what students in Athens and other towns and cities across America will make next with their MakerBot 3D Printers.
