Win A MakerBot Replicator 2X Experimental 3D Printer!

If you haven’t explored the MakerBot Customizer, the tool that lets basically everyone be a designer on Thingiverse, check it out! Customizer is an app built on the 3D design program OpenSCAD that designers use to upload customizable designs. When designers with the OpenSCAD know-how upload these designs, any Thingiverse user can take the basic template and customize it to suit their tastes. Read all about it here, or login to Thingiverse to get started. Read on to find out how this new tool can win you something even more awesome.

Now for the fun part! The MakerBot Customizer Challenge is a chance for those of you who know how to use OpenSCAD, or are excited to learn, to upload amazing new customizable designs that the entire MakerBot Thingiverse community can use and be inspired by.

PRIZE One MakerBot Replicator 2X Experimental 3D Printer to the winner of each category.

CATEGORIES Useful, Wearable, and Artistic.

TIME OF CHALLENGE January 23-March 8, 2013, 11:59 PM ET. We will announce the winning entry at the giant annual arts and technology festival SXSW, and make sure the press knows about the winner and other great participants. We want to make you a star and famous 3D designer!

HOW You upload a design that works with MakerBot Customizer. You can learn about that process here. Tag each of your entries, with “Customizer,” “Customizer Challenge,” and the category you are submitting into (see below). Once it’s uploaded, encourage people in your social networks to use your design to create their own custom things. The more times it’s used, the more points for you, so get the word out!

JUDGING Our panel of judges will pick a winning design in each of three categories: Useful, Wearable, and Artistic. Enter as many designs as you want! Designs will be considered subjectively by the judges and objectively by the number of times people use your design to create new things. There will be one winner per category.

Get started with MakerBot Customizer today. The race is officially on!

UPDATE! You can see all the entries here.

Wonderful more customizer spam on thingiverse.

Or… More awesome customizer things that empower people to take that first step into becoming a designer. 🙂

As well as an opportunity for designers to take their own designs to the next level.

I don’t like seeing all the signs and phone cases. But I have never even considered learning something like openscad. But after I won my replicator this stuff consumes my mind. I am eager see what will come of this challenge.

Customizer is undoubtedly a powerful tool and arguably the best addition to Thingiverse yet. The are some, including myself, who feel it is a little too obtrusive in the way it automatically publishes your customization as a new thing under your account regardless of how you want to use it. To me, the solution for better utilizing its potential while also making everyone happy is very simple: Have customizations create an “I made one!” (or similar category) with the parameters used listed in the description. This would certainly entice me to start using Customizer as well as contributing customizable designs.

What happens if the winner has a customizer script that has a design derived from someone else? Is it the design that wins or the person who coded it into customizer?

I’m no longer seeing the variants under “New and Noteworthy”. Only “The Firehose” shows everything. I’m now a great fan of the Customizer. Its even got me to think about useful additions I could make. It is also good to see example code and its implications.

Well done to those who developed this tool and thank you about reigning in the “spam”

This is really brilliant – you are opening up the world of 3-D printing and distributed manufacturing to everyone. Thank you! Make sure that searching features keep up with what I can only assume to be much higher volume in the fire hose to come.

How do I get to the Customizer? I click on “Launch This App” and it keeps going around in circles.

Is there anyway to test and tweak the customizer script with your interface prior to uploading? I would like to work out the kinks of a design prior to uploading.

FatalDischarge: Could you please open a ticket at with more info like what browser you’re using and we’ll try to figure out why you can’t run Customizer.

gwpoulos: We’re working on a fix to allow you to preview un-published things, until then you must upload your openscad script to thingiverse and publish it in order to view it in Customizer.

So when you say “the number of times people use your design to create new things” are you counting anyone who enters new parameters into the OpenSCAD script to make their own version of a design? Or do they actually have to create a derivative that’s something new?

Can upload a Thing with Proengineer for the competition?

    1. So, comp is open to everyone (not country specific)?
    2. Many things on Thingiverse are based on other peoples scripts with improvements. Does the comp restrict the use of other peoples code to complete your entry?
    3. Both Solidworks and Inventor allow for easy design of “configurations” (i.e. configurable parts), will customiser be able to import these files sometime in the future? I’ve downloaded OpenSCAD and I’ve gotta say it’s quite clunky.

Ozman13, Customizer is based on OpenSCAD, which is a programming language that generates 3D things. You can learn more about OpenSCAD at .

Is there any limitations for those of us not in the United States?

Given that a large proportion of the submissions on Thingiverse are licensed under Creative Commons, what’s the competition’s position on derivative work? Would you consider submissions which borrowed from other scripts (for instance to make a particular shape)?

Exciting competition. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in!

Customizer seems to have serious bugs! The thing I created and went to the effort to make customizable, does not display correctly in Customizer. It looks great in OpenSCAD! I’m not really sure what to expect from Customizer, but I’d expect the display to be correct, right?

Have a look at thing 51183, Customizable Sundial, by Doctek. Look at the image (stl) for the thing, then bring it up in Customizer. All the text and many of the lines are gone. Download it and test it OpenSCAD. All the lines and text are where they should be.

Any help (like work-arounds) would be appreciated, and fixes would be even better!

Doctek, for thing 51183 is it “include” vs “use” for “”?
The Makerbot “Customizable Sign” has “use “.
Haven’t had a chance to check it – just a suggestion.

Doctek, sorry it took the angle brackets as tags.
    It should have read
write/write.scad (inside the empty quotes “” and after “use “)

Customizer can’t import .stl files – is this going to be true for the entire contest duration? Aka is it a RULE that the object has to be all OPENSCAD ‘code’ and not importing from a stl? If that’s so then that stinks…. I was gonna share my invention 🙂

Let me get straight. This is what I found out.
To use Customizer, the design must have “Customizer” tag and
to enter the competition, the design must have “Customizer Challenge” tag.

  • Takuya
    February 21, 2013 at 2:13 am

To enter the competition, the design must be published and have “Customizer Challenge” tag.

if I have uploaded multiple OPENSCAD files as part of a ‘thing’, how do I get ‘customizer’ to use the file I want? Can I ‘set default to’ this file or that, like I can with pictures? ( or do I always have to upload updates / fixes using the original OPENSCAD filename ? )

    Hey guys
Just wondering where the link went to view all the entries on the Thingiverse home page went?

  • Jeshua Lacock
    February 26, 2013 at 4:37 pm

@Belfry: you can only have a single OpenSCAD file per customizable thing. You can add a little logic to your file so the user can choose which ‘thing’ they want to customize…

Does anyone know if the entries are being reviewed for changes throughout the competition date?
    That is;
If I loaded up an entry, then made changes a week later to improve it, is it better to modify the current entry, or should I reload it as a new entry?

  • Rob Lloyd
    February 27, 2013 at 10:39 am

My Thing ( ) is tagged with “Customizer Challenge” and does not show up in the collection of all entries.

Why? What might “disqualify” it or otherwise explain why it is not in the list?

BTW, I made the mistake of trying to use the “Contact Us” support form and that seems to be a dead zone – why is it still a live page if the “Knowledge Base” doesn’t exist or work?
