We’re getting old-school Slashdotted!

If you’re desperately trying to browse the store or arrange a Replicator order, you might have noticed that things are a little slow…well, it looks like we’re getting Slashdotted like it was 1999!  We’re bringing a few more servers on-line to help deal with the load, but in the meantime, check out this Slashdot-produced video where Bre breaks down the features of our newest machine.

They definitely need to make a kit version available for the new replicator. If the fully assembled version is only $1749. Why don’t they sell a kit version for even cheaper than the makerbot ToM. Comparing the prices, you would be looking at $600-800 for an unassembled kit. So why not?

    Hi Taylor,

Thanks for your interest in the Replicator. We’re not planning to release a kit version — an assembled unit helps get the technology into the hands of the most people, so we designed the Replicator from the beginning with assembly in mind. All of our in-house processes have been designed for this, so offering a kit would actually increase our overhead rather than lowering it. Furthermore, the time savings between a kit and fully-assembled version would be fairly low, so the price difference between the versions would have been too small to justify the extra production line that would be necessary. (If we ever are able to do a kit, the price difference would likely be much less than what you mention here…which makes it a less compelling option for everyone.)

The machine is still very open and hackable, however, and should be even easier to service and maintain than our previous designs.

Thanks for your understanding and support.

Are you planning on making the new stepstruder MK8 head available, as in the past, for those of us who want to build something a little differently? What about the boards?

I’ve always like the makerbot, but I do have to admit that the wood shell has been a turnoff. There’s real no logical reason why (unless it’s past CNC experience throwing a shadow), it just is 🙂

Yes, we will be making MK8 parts available as supplies allow. The MK8 is a minor revision of the MK7 (I would have called it MK7+ or something like that, personally) and many of the changes are simply to allow it to be mounted to the Replicator’s gantry system. There is a new nozzle that we’ll be selling individually at some point.

We’ll also be sharing all the design files on Thingiverse if you want to fabricate a shell in another material. That should go up around the same time the machines start shipping.
