Just in case you missed it, we recently updated our guide to stepper driver reference voltages. This new table includes the recommended reference values for each type of stepper motor that has ever gone into the Thing-O-Matic. Confused about which type of motor you’ve received? There’s also a reference photo that should make everything clear.
The big news is that the recommended voltage has dropped for many of the motors, so when you grab the old multimeter and crack open the case of your Thing-O-Matic (or Cupcake with Gen4 electronics) you’ll actually be dialing the voltages down. This will help reduce waste heat and lead to quieter operation, while still making great prints.
As always when you’re making these adjustments, do it with the unit powered on, but with the motors disabled, and never, ever disconnect a stepper motor while your electronics are powered up. Also, the RC1 and RC2 pots go the opposite way from the expected — they decrease when you turn them clockwise.
So pull out the multimeters and get to work!
