58 Pairs of Earrings
As Ferris Bueller famously said, “You can never go too far.”
Thingiverse citizen Schorhr has uploaded nearly 60 totally different earring designs. 1 His designs include earrings in the shape of Tetris blocks, pi to eleven decimal places, the Enterprise being attacked by a Borg ship, traffic lights, an excavator, a gecko, the earth’s core, a little tentacle monster, a Gameboy, ball bearings, and wool and needles. Now, don’t think these are just the whimsical ramblings of a mad designer – Schorhr has actually printed these things and uploaded pictures of them2 to prove it.
In Schorhr’s own words:
Why am I doing this?
- To test how small I can go with the printer
- The little prints allow me to try lots of stuff without wasting much time and material
- It increases the WAF ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wife_acceptance_factor )
- 3D printing + Gifts = Love!3
Let’s put Schorhr’s accomplishment in perspective. In two years of Thingiverse‘s existence the most things anyone had uploaded as of 12/31/2010 was an astonishing 80 designs from MakerBot’s own Zach “Hoeken” Smith. Schorhr has managed to design nearly 75% of that amount in about 60 days time and upload more than half of that amount in just one day. It’s no small task to upload a printable file, the design file, a screenshot or photograph, description, and instructions for each one.
Keep up the good work!
- For the sake of accuracy, I only found 54 Thing under Schorhr’s Things section. I can totally see how a few could get lost as you upload such an enormous pile of designs. [↩]
- Usually painted with nail polish! [↩]
- I would take exception with this equation. I think it’s more like “Love + 3D printing = Gifts!” However, I might have forgotten to carry the one. [↩]

Wow, thanks!
I was affraid the mass-upload would be considered spam
It really took a long time to sort my files and get them uploaded, but I felt I had to give something back to Thingiverse, after printing other people’s models.
The files are still a bit sloppy, but that’s why I provided all the source files for people to tweak the models so they print well on their machines.
Missing numbers
I did not upload some designs due to copyright reasons. Some models I used where 1:1 copies of Google Warehouse or pictures from cartoons I simply extruded – I was even unsure if I could upload some of the things I did.
As I solved some initial problems and got the hang of what is possible and what is not, I am now aiming at mostly self-made designs whenever I can spare the time.
I allready have a few unprinted designs and half-finished stuff, so reaching 100 earrings will be most likely. Suprisingly, it is much easier to keep the one-a-day scedual as I thought, even though it is “just” done with Sketchup.
Perhaps I will also upload some RC quadrocopter, technical experiments and random stuff when I get arround to finish those parts.
Formula
It’s like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ohm's_law_triangle.svg (Getting a printer, getting loved, getting gifts- allways a win-win situation)!
Nail polish works extremely well, I did not expect it would. It was suggested by my girlfriend, and I now own the whole set:

At 0,38 Eur per 11ml it is also one of the cheapest paints out there.
My guess is that the solvent softens the ABS, which results in smooth coats and a suprisingly good bond. It does take a while to dry though, and multiple coatings may cause problems with fine details… Fortunaly the cheap stuff usualy works well with a single coating.
I’dd love to see some people print this with Makerbot, Reprap and co. I do love my printer, but one of these day’s I need a open machine to explore all the possibilities… Really currious if these will print on a ToM! It would be fun to tweak and experiment with fine details.
Unfortunaly my budget will not allow another investment like this for the next hundred years or so
Reading the blog regulary. Great stuff.
Have a nice day!
