Introducing MakerBot ABS Kilogram Spools!

Today we have a 10 new products in The MakerBot Plastics section. Our ABS filaments are now available as 1 Kilogram spools! We have been preparing to transition our plastic offerings to spools for some time, and now we’re ready to let them out of the bag. We have the first group of spooled ABS plastic online today, including two new colors available in both 3mm and 1.75mm formats.

New Safety Orange and Fruit Punch Magenta are here, along with resupplies of our classic colors in 1.75mm width on industrial strength spools for easier use. We’re really happy with spooled filaments, they are more compact and a lot cleaner to use. They are handy to mount in your workspace and are stackable too.

Charles Pax created a great printable spool mount that screws right onto your Thing-O-Matic too.
Check them out!

FYI for those of us who are metric challenged, 1 Kg = 2.2 lbs (for comparison to the way it was sold by the pound before).

This plastic is getting awfully expensive. You all better not be getting materials greed like every printer manufacturer ever.

Why is it so much more expensive? In this manner, 2 Kg (4.4 lbs), nearly the same as the 5 pound lots, would be 96$.

It got more expensive for a few reasons. Plastic got a bit more expensive and we added the spool and we finally bundled in the expense of bagging it with desiccant. When you look at what we were selling it before, it’s not much more, but we did finally raise prices to reflect the upgrade with the bag, desiccant and spool. We’re not out to screw people on the price of the plastic. We want it to be as cheap as possible. Also, we kept natural extra cheap!

So we know the weight, but what is the length of the filament on the spools?
