Some of those entries, including many of the more interesting ones, are blatantly unprintable on a Makerbot. Some of them would be unprintable on any commercial 3D printer I am aware of purely due to size issues.

It might be informative if the judging criteria for the contest was clarified somewhat. I would hate to see people disappointed if their entry gets disqualified after the fact for being unprintable. At the same time I could see contestants who spend effort tailoring their entry to be possible and practical being somewhat bitter if they lose to a blue-sky design that has no hope of being actually printed.

Seeing as there are plenty of both in the gallery it might be worth posting a general clarification of the contest.

Do previous submissions also count? I’ve submitted quite some things so far, and since I have Darwin’s and Mini-mendels, adding a Makerbot would really make my collection of fabbing equipment complete ;)

    Hey Ryan,

The contest is vague to see what kind of talent, raw or refined, is out there.

Hey Erik, go for it. Old stuff counts too, but new stuff is encouraged.

The backlash on bad parts being put on thingiverse is short sighted. Did they reject pictures from flickr in the first week? Better organization will be required, but I see a lot of the “unprintable” parts as ver 0.1 from most of these people. The added collaboration will be very exciting!

Most of those are silly. My vote is for the 3 sided mobius strip.

    Hi,

It’d be nice to setup a depository for Windows, Linux, Other build files … the files you send to the MakerBot … and maybe even a few other commercial machines too …

How about an article for Robot Magazine, Servo Magazine? About a guy who invents and makes prototypes with a MakerBot?

    Hey Bre,

So is this contest based on skill or is everyone equally likely to win? IE is it hand-picked or picked at random (like with a random number generator, random.org)?

Yes, a clear answer to Colin’s question could be useful. I’m seeing people putting a lot (by a lot, I mean more than 10 some even more than 30) entries to this contest. Of course if the winner is choosen at random, people with multiple entries (even weird ones) will get a big advantage…
I’m a bit worried about the lack of upfront clear rules (for entries and judging). This could lead to a lot of disappointed people.
