MakerBot Moving Sale
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that we recently signed a lease on a new warehouse which shall henceforth be referred to as The Factory. Well, we’re moving the entire MakerBot operation to this new factory. This is happening on July 20th. Unfortunately this means that a) we have to move a lot of stuff and b) there will be a few days of downtime as we move everything and get setup in the new factory.
We want to make the move easier on ourselves, so we’ve figured out an easy way to do it: the less stuff we have, the less we have to move! So, we’re doing a two day moving sale. Use the coupon code GTFO in the MakerBot store to get 10% off anything. We only have 1 deluxe kit left, so maybe you’ll be able to pick it up for cheap if you’re quick. All orders must be received by Midnight, Thursday 16th to be shipped out. Any orders received after that day will most likely be shipped out once we get setup in the new warehouse. We’re aiming to be up and running again by Friday, July 24. We apologize for the delay that this will cause, but this is just another one of those growing pains we’re dealing with.

I’m pleasantly amazed that the legal types haven’t completely killed off that type of whimsy.
Of course, this might be an attempt at caution with respect to self-reproducing machines.
But there’s nothing in Asimov’s Laws of Robotics against self-replication — unless the ‘bots literally crowded out people. There have been a number of Science Fiction stories exploring that scenario.

There is no way you can agree that those robots will abide by the 3 laws of robotics… they just aren’t sophisticated anough. Suppose, for example, you pass out from a hit of nitrous and slump face-first into your bowl of cheerios… suppose further that your annoying habit of hogging up all the milk has left a pool of milk in your cheerios of sufficient depth for you to drown in…
your unplugged makerbot will, through inaction, fail to prevent you from coming to harm (and, lacking the required sensors, will be blissfully unaware that you were ever in harms way),
thus violating the first law of robotics (allowing, through inaction, a person to come to harm)…
Would you then be evicted (or rather would your heirs be evicted since you’d have already have expired in the aforesaid cheerios bowl)?
I’m just sayin…

Hmm… how long until you’re able to print/manufacture a Makerbot assembly line, I wonder? Tip in the small parts and raw materials at one end, have Makerbots roll off the finish line at the other end.
I’d love to see a (printable) standard attachment which was just a benchtop-size industrial robot arm capable of loading the Makerbot with consumables, removing the finished product, and assembling items printed in multiple parts.
Can’t wait until the Makerbot can handle metal and simple circuitry. As soon as it can print controllable hardware extensions for itself, it won’t matter if they’re physically huge and clunky compared to ICs, as long as they do the job. A Makerbot with a placement/assembly arm and sufficient material might even be able to bootstrap itself into half a computer-controlled machine shop.

How long will it be before there is a makerbot which has a working support material extruder and a plastruder, so that it can print an object with overhangs and then have that material dissolved in water? I am currently saving up for a makerbot, however I am in no rush to get one until it can print more complicated shapes (with overhangs).
